My name is Ilona Harley and I have been nominated as a Councillor in the upcoming Onkaparinga Council Elections for the ward of Thalassa.
From 14th October 2022 everyone eligible to vote in these elections will receive a Postal Ballot in the mail.
It will then be necessary for you to fill in your Ballot and post it off so it’s received no later than 10th November. Please allow at least 3 days for postage.
I am currently working as a teacher and I have lived in the Onkaparinga Council area for 23 years. During my career I worked in Special Education where I taught children with a diverse range of challenges, focusing on and fostering their abilities.
The most rewarding aspect of my work is helping others in need and believing in their capacity to achieve the unthinkable. Watching them reach and even surpass their goals is why I do what I do.
I have been very concerned about all the aspects of Fire Prevention and particularly the way it relates to Fuel Loads in public land. The Cuddlee Creek fire really brought this home to me.
We are living in difficult times.
I want to play my part in building thriving neighbourhoods for the next generations of our region.
We need to cut Rates. I would like to see a return to a more traditional focus for Council of Rates, Rubbish and Roads to make our suburbs as attractive, desirable and beneficial to our wellbeing as possible.
Councils were initially organised to maintain rates, roads and rubbish. Rates are being increased, according to the value of homes I was told recently. When the cost of living is rising, interest rates for mortgages are increasing and home owners get ‘hit’ with increases to their rates, it does become challenging!
Key components for partnership with residents, is communication, and according to the Onkaparinga Council Plan 2030 … “being transparent and accountable, sharing information in clear, accessible and timely ways!” I can agree with that but I don’t feel like it’s happening.
Like a lot of people, I feel, that too much is being approved, by Council, for things that could have a detrimental impact on our health and well being. There are a lot of questions to be answered.
Technology moves fast but we need to ensure that it is not negatively impacting people and our environment. There are more incidences of cancer now and they are happening with, not only young children, but even babies now!
Why is this so?
I am concerned for the legacy we are leaving behind for our grand children!
I have teamed up with 11 other candidates in this election who believe like I do. We are all ordinary rate payers who love their community and if we are all elected we will have every opportunity to see these changes happen.
